Impersonations of Famous People Aren’t Just Funny: ... They’re Proof of Real Fame
Actor, comedian, and impressionist extraordinaire Aries Spears is best known for his 8-season stint on Fox’s MADtv, but he’s also a serious actor, and he could probably have a serious career as a rapper if he wasn’t too busy impersonating other hip hop stars. But he’s really good at it, so we can’t complain.
A video of Spears “doing” rap stars LLCoolJ, Snoop Dog, DMX and Jay-Z (from a radio morning show back in the fall of 2006) has earned over 7.5 million views since it was posted on YouTube.
Spears also does some pretty funny bits about R. Kelly and Michael Jackson, but they’re not for every audience.
Here’s something to ponder: when are you so famous that people will recognize an impersonation of you? How does that happen?
These figures are famous enough to catch Spears’ attention, and they have the unique style, look, sound and personality that make them memorable. We recognize the impression because we’d know that voice, or that rhythm, anywhere.
We all know that hip-hop is a huge industry right now. It’s alive and vibrant, and hot acts are coming out all over the world. So how do you stand out as a rapper? Well, you need a hit. You need to get into people’s heads so they don’t forget you.
What does a great musician or recording artist need to make the big time? Great song lyrics, a creative sound, a catchy hook, a one-of-a-kind dance, anything that sets you apart and makes people remember your song. After that, it’s up to you, your talent, and your salesmanship.
How do you get noticed?
Think up a good dance. Some of the simplest, catchiest songs ever recorded just tell you how to do a dance, and if the dance catches on, you, the song, and the dance have all hit it big.
Consider Soulja Boy and the well-known dance he created. It launched his career. Soon fans were creating their own videos on YouTube. It’s like Aries Spears and his spot-on impressions: imitation is not only the sincerest form of flattery; it’s also good publicity.
How would you make the big time? Do you have a great song? Are you using the right promotion tactics? Did you invent a dance move? Show off your talent. Record a demo. Find creative friends and shoot a video. Try to come up with a concept that you think will keep people sharing your song with friends. Now post your masterpiece online, because you never know who the next star will be. Maybe someday Aries Spears will be doing an impression of you.

We Owe It All to Pong
Pong: the beginning of it all. Who would have thought that a pixilated ball bopping between mobile rectangles on a black screen would entertain millions and inspire a generation to the eventual creation of lifelike 3D gaming environments.
Pong’s rudimentary ball and paddle art led to more complex and realistic shapes. Perhaps because game designers hadn’t mastered background animation, many classic games were set in space. Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Tempest provided more complex character movement and visual stimuli.
The next stage of game design produced side-scrolling, multilevel questing and adventure games. Videogame characters could now be human or animal, and didn’t have to conform to a simple rectangular geometry. Gamers emerged for the first time and became more sophisticated in their gaming needs, and gamers became game designers.
Some unique innovations came about in the early years of arcade game design with the advent of laserdisc-based consoles. Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace featured traditional hand-drawn cell animation by movie animation legend Don Bluth and game design by mustachioed master Rick Dyer. This analog animation style set a high bar and forced computer animation to evolve. As computer processors and video graphic engines became more powerful, new depth and breadth has been granted to the gamer’s experience, but we still feel nostalgia for the games that started it all.
These days the videogame industry is bigger and more innovative than ever. New creative talent is always needed to fuel this multi-billion-dollar industry. A successful digital art portfolio highlighting ones computer animation skills is a prerequisite for entry into the lucrative industry of game design, but a dedicated gamer will also know that it all started with Pong. Big ideas often start small, so get your thumbs off the controller and start dreaming big.
