They’ve Come a Long Way in Three Years: Marketing at the Dawn of Web 2.0
TWhile the computer processor company Intel has eagerly embraced social network marketing and other advertising strategies made newly possible in part by the product they sell, the high tech company has also been known to push their products in a surprisingly low-tech fashion.
Intel’s 2005 advertising campaign included an event at the Galleria Meravigli in Milan where the marketers used the Italian fashion capital’s crop of high-fashion models as old-fashioned sandwich-board carriers. In this case the “sandwich boards” were actually video screens, presumably powered by Intel processors.
Going back to the basic level of human-to-human interaction isn’t a bad marketing strategy, especially when you focus your onslaught on a commercial trend-setting center like Milan. Of course it wasn’t enough to simply send these ladies out and cause a stir: the walk-through was documented on video, and probably made its way into a few private photo albums as well. 2005 was still a bit early for companies to be savvy about viral marketing, but Intel probably had a hunch.
Back in 2005, advertisers were still trying to come up with creative ideas that utilized the new Web 2.0 technology. They had yet to move beyond using funny videos to draw more views or devising simple interactive games that would look downright prehistoric a mere three years later.
But even at the beginning it was clear that viral marketing and social network marketing were going to be huge. The major hurdle that marketers had to overcome was allowing the consumers to have more control. Letting go a little bit and allowing users to freely post and share content must have been scary for marketers at first, but it has allowed advertising to creep into yet another aspect of our “private” lives. Is this a good thing for consumers? There are definitely pros and cons. Is this a good thing for advertisers? You betcha. Which ad campaigns and marketing tactics do you think really work?
