Limitless Possibilities With Photoshop’s Layers
Learning Photoshop is essential if you are interested in a career in digital art or graphic design. It seems like everyone knows Photoshop at least a little bit—the program is almost a universal language in the world of digital art—but the more proficient you are with this useful and flexible software, the more options you will have as a creative artist.
Photoshop is synonymous with taking images out of their original context. This is generally what we mean when we ask ourselves whether an image has been “photoshopped.” Now, whether “photoshopping” is a little bit like lying is not the issue here, despite all the fun tabloids might have with this technique.
A digital artist or graphic designer will often be called upon to make a composite of two or more separate images, so you’ll want to know how to do it right.
Photoshop tutorials are very helpful, even for creative artists already familiar with the tools. Try this exercise in separating an image from its original background and compositing using the layers palette:
First, use the polygonal lasso tool to make an outline around the image you want to cut out. This tool makes the cleanest edge around the image.
After you’ve made your outline, delete the areas you don’t want.
Now, make a new layer behind the remaining image by selecting “Layer” and “New” from the dropdown menu.
A layers palette will pop up with your layers listed. Make sure the layer with the image is on the top in this menu (you can drag them up and down as needed). For your second layer, choose a bright, solid color so you can see any ragged edges or white space you may have missed cutting out.
When you are satisfied with the outlines of your image, make another layer with a background image of your choice. (Move this layer to the number two position in your layers palette.)
You can play with multiple layers and different effects in the layers palette until you get an image you like.
Use the eraser tool in a large size to soften any hard edges and allow the layers to blend seamlessly. Remember to select the layer you want to work on when you use the eraser: it only works on one layer at a time.
Once you get the hang of using layers, the possibilities for creative designs are endless. Having mastered yet another essential Photoshop skill, you’ll be ready to conquer the world of digital art in no time.
