Worldwide Construction Boom Means...

Description

Hot Jobs in the Creative Sector

Major urban centers around the world—in places like China, India, Dubai and Russia—are experiencing a construction boom of unprecedented proportions. Building is happening so fast in some places that residents must feel as though they wake in a different city every morning.

This is good news for architects and interior designers. Developers are eager, not only to build, but to build unique, stand-out structures. Countries with rapidly growing economies want to show off their new power in the global economy, and world-class architecture is the name of the game. That means that young architects and interior designers may have the chance to travel to—and practice their art in--places they have never seen. The most ambitious of these artists will be given the opportunity to help build these new, growing cities--the likes of which the world has never seen.

Countries with developing economies have also begun to recognize the need to compete in terms of sustainability. Whether it is due to a genuine concern for the environment or a thinly veiled concern for their own images, developers are crazy about green building. Architectural renderings that incorporate energy-saving or self-sustaining features pose new creative challenges for architects and are popular with investors. Interior designers are also being encouraged to experiment with earth-friendly and sustainable materials.

Despite the recent economic downturn in the United States, the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts increased opportunities in the field of architecture. Jobs were expected to grow by 18% between 2006 and 2016. Interior design jobs were expected to increase by 19% in the same period. This positive outlook has a lot to do with the demand from developing urban centers around the world. The handbook cautions that competition for these highly sought-after jobs will be fierce, but that individual creativity and implementation of creative designs will be the deciding factor.
