The public’s desire for behind-the-scenes photos is seemingly unquenchable, yet the paparazzi are criticized for their invasive tactics, often by the same concerned citizens who can’t help taking a peek at the pics!
For the lucky stiff who knows people who know people, or the sturdy soul who can hack the criticism, the long waits, and the kicks and punches from bodyguards and irate celebs, the payoff is huge.
There are two ways to break into the world of celebrity photography. The first is very rare. In this scenario, you become known and admired by the rich and famous for the art and unique design sense you bring to your portraits, and celebrities come begging for a photo shoot. Sadly this only happens to about one in a billion shooters.
The second scenario is much more likely: that you will invest in high quality digital photography equipment--including a compact camera for close encounters and a good digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera with a telephoto lens for long shots—and start following the famous around, hoping for the money shot.
Decide which kind of paparazzo you want to be. Do you want to make your reputation by flattery and sweetness? Do you want to get consent for exclusives? Or are you the aggressive type, the private eye type, the scrambling over bushes and peeking through hedges paparazzo? If you choose the latter you might also want to invest in stunt driving lessons.
Whether your approach is challenging and aggressive or buttery smooth, you need to get the photo that makes the front cover, or you’re going nowhere. So get some good photography tips from the guy hiding in the next tree over, and when you get the shot, sell it to the highest bidder. |
