| Goodbye and Good Luck to a Legend of the Runways The Italian couturier and fashion legend Valentino Garavani retired this year after 48 years in the business. Valentino, who debuted his first full collection in 1962, has dressed great women of style including Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Julia Roberts. As befits an icon of the fashion world, Valentino’s farewell party has been stretched over the past year with galas and museum retrospectives in Rome and Paris. The Rome exhibition opened in early July 2007 and ran to the end of October. “Valentino a Roma. 45 Years of Style” was exhibited at the ancient sacrificial altar Ara Pacis and was curated by Patrick Kinmonth and Antonio Monfreda. Highlights of the exhibit included a hall of mannequins modeling luscious red dresses in various styles—this particular shade of red has long been Valentino’s signature color--and exhibits showing how and when Valentino dressed some of his best and most glamorous customers. The sea of red dresses was reprised on the runway in Paris this January, when the legendary fashion designer presented his final collection. The Musée des Arts-Decoratifs in Paris held its own exhibition this summer. “Valentino, thèmes et variations” ran from mid-June until the 21st of September. Valentino may have quit the world of haute couture, but he hasn’t abandoned the world of fashion design entirely. The retired designer has said that he will turn his creative attention to designing for ballet and opera. Anyone considering a fashion career should take time to consider the influence of this overtly romantic, hardworking, and consistently visionary fashion designer. Over the course of his long career, Valentino’s style stayed true to his singular vision: consistently classic and elegant styles in menswear as well as women’s clothing and feminine, romantic textures and frankly sexy colors for his red-carpet one-offs. If your dream is to become a fashion designer, don’t be afraid to dream big and absorb the lessons of Valentino’s very long career at the top: stick to your vision, aim for immortality, and make beautiful, beautiful clothes.
