Fashion & Modeling

Let the Wind Blow

Description

Why is it so often a windy day in the fashion photography studio? What does the windswept fashion model say to us? Is she better at selling product than the buttoned down, windless fashion model?

Well, the fact is, wind is a pretty handy tool for fashion photography. Sometimes there just isn’t enough life in the scene. A little wind instantly combats any perception of limpness in hair or clothing, presses the fabric against the body for a more dynamic silhouette, and generally gives everything in the shot a little lift and movement.

Wind is a handy tool, but that doesn’t mean you should crank up the fan for every shoot. A good fashion photographer considers the fashion designer, the model, and what he or she is modeling before coming up with a game plan for the photo shoot.

Hair and makeup also come in to play: don’t turn the fan on a carefully sculpted up-do unless you want to be killed by your hairdresser. The model’s look will dictate how the scene is lit, the use of backdrops or props, and, naturally, whether or not to turn on the wind machine.

So, having decided that you need a little wind to breathe life into your shoot, what do you do if you can’t afford a studio-grade wind machine?

The cheapest high-powered fans still cost around $600 in the U.S. Luckily, you can scavenge or make your own wind with a little effort. Find out if any local businesses or buildings have large fans they no longer need, or ask if you can set up your shoot around their fan.

If that doesn’t pan out, pros suggest that you ask an assistant to wave a large, flat object to create a breeze, or borrow a leaf blower.

You can set up professional-looking fashion shoots and use all the pros’ tricks on a tiny budget. You just need to stay flexible and resourceful, at least until you start earning enough to buy that big fan.
