Who’s Afraid of Digital Art?
... Give it a Try and You Might Find You Like It

Some of us creative types are still a little bit afraid of the digital revolution. Sure, we use the web to communicate and to learn, to gain access to the artistic vision of our peers and to get our inspiration, but some of us still think that digital art is beyond our grasp. You may think that fields like computer animation and video game design require a kind of technical mind or knowledge of software and coding that just doesn’t fit with your creative character.

If you’ve been thinking about going to art or design school, you will have noticed just how many schools have started or expanded programs in digital art and computer animation. This is due to demand not only from students who are more and more interested in these fields; it is also due to increased demand from the marketplace. Creative careers of all kinds are becoming more plentiful in this digital age, and those of us who feel a little left out—painters, sculptors, traditional filmmakers—are going to miss out on a huge opportunity if we continue to shy away from computers.

The fact is, you can realize your artistic vision and start down a very promising career path if you are willing to learn, and a school is the best place to start. Even if you want to pursue a traditional path in art school, don’t be afraid to take a few classes in digital art and design, 3-D modeling and character creation, digital video production and editing. You might be surprised. It could be that your sculpture skills will put you at the top of the class in 3-D modeling, and you just might enjoy it.

Video game designers and film and video production companies need employees who are not simply technically gifted but who have a strong, unique artistic vision. You can always pursue traditional art forms, but learning about digital art can send you on creative paths you may never have considered. Your newfound computer skills might also get you a job that helps pay for all that paint, all those canvasses you wanted to splurge on. So be flexible and give digital art a try. Because you just never know where it might lead.
