Elite Model Look 2008 Promises to Kickstart Major Careers for Newcomers

Elite Modeling Management, past and present home to supermodels including Gisele Bündchen, Claudia Schiffer, and Tyra Banks, also represents the winners and sometimes the non-winning contestants on the popular Top Model series around the world, but Elite doesn’t just look for new fashion model prospects on TV.

The internationally renowned modeling agency holds its annual Elite Model Look contests in numerous countries around the world. The winner goes on to the international competition, held in a new location every year. The 2008 competition will be held in Sanya, China.

Thailand’s winner, 16-year-old Nastassia Neufeld, beat out 19 other semi-finalists in the last round of competition, held April 26 in Phuket, and will go on to compete in China. Like the other finalists heading to China, Neufeld is guaranteed a 2-year contract with Elite, whether or not she wins the grand prize.

A modeling career like the one Neufeld is about to embark upon can change a young woman’s life. Fashion models journey all over the world, meeting top designers and enjoying experiences most of us dream about. For many young models, it’s a self-discovery process, allowing them to gain confidence and get a better idea about what they might do after their stint as a fashionplate. Models have an easy access to creative careers in fashion design, styling, and makeup, and as style and fashion trend experts on television, online, or in print.

Elite model Tyra Banks managed to transform her successful modeling career into a small media empire. After parlaying her supermodel status into cameo roles on tv sitcoms, Banks went on to create the hit reality tv show America’s Next Top Model in 2003. The show has since spawned local versions all over the world. In 2005 Banks premiered her highly successful daytime talk show, The Tyra Banks Show. Which just goes to show you, a modeling career is often just the beginning of a long and successful creative life, and it can all start when you enter a showcase competition like the Elite Model Look.

You may also be interested in this video:
Nastassia Neufeld joins the Elite

Fall Fashion Down Under Starts at LMFF

Held annually in March, The L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival showcases Australia’s hottest autumn and winter collections. It’s the largest consumer fashion event in Australia--over 300,000 people attend annually—and it’s a great chance for fashion models and fashion designers to showcase their talent. The internationally renowned festival is open to the public, giving ordinary people a unique chance to experience the fashion world and to learn about new and up-coming styles and trends. At the LMFF 2008, the look was happy-chic, with lots of color and sportswear-inspired fashions in a number of collections. We also saw a lot of eighties-influenced bling—gold chains, cycling gloves, chunky jewelry—on the models, and high-heeled sneakers made a comeback. The Bonds Underwear Fashion Parade (shown) was a fine example of the 2008 look, featuring big, teased hair, mesh shirts, clunky bangles and big bursts of color. We’re looking forward to seeing what rolls down the runways in 2009.

The festival produces superior runway shows and strives to provide the highest quality stylists, hair and makeup artists, and stage production. For a fashion designer, this level of service relieves a little bit of the pressure of putting on a fantastic runway show. For a fashion model, the LMFF is a dream. Runway models have all the support they need to strut their stuff in high style, and get a ton of exposure. A gig at the LMFF can really kick-start a modeling career.

Going to the LMFF as a spectator can be a quick and easy education in fashion. If you are interested in a fashion career, try volunteering. Whether you are looking to break into the fashion industry as a stylist, makeup or hair artist, producer, fashion designer or model, volunteering at the LMFF is a fantastic way to learn the ropes and make connections with the arbiters of style. No experience is required. Just contact the volunteer coordinator at lmff.com, but do it soon. Volunteers for 2009 are asked to apply in early October.

L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2008

Why is it so often a windy day in the fashion photography studio? What does the windswept fashion model say to us? Is she better at selling product than the buttoned down, windless fashion model?

Well, the fact is, wind is a pretty handy tool for fashion photography. Sometimes there just isn’t enough life in the scene. A little wind instantly combats any perception of limpness in hair or clothing, presses the fabric against the body for a more dynamic silhouette, and generally gives everything in the shot a little lift and movement.

Wind is a handy tool, but that doesn’t mean you should crank up the fan for every shoot. A good fashion photographer considers the fashion designer, the model, and what he or she is modeling before coming up with a game plan for the photo shoot.

Hair and makeup also come in to play: don’t turn the fan on a carefully sculpted up-do unless you want to be killed by your hairdresser. The model’s look will dictate how the scene is lit, the use of backdrops or props, and, naturally, whether or not to turn on the wind machine.

So, having decided that you need a little wind to breathe life into your shoot, what do you do if you can’t afford a studio-grade wind machine?

The cheapest high-powered fans still cost around $600 in the U.S. Luckily, you can scavenge or make your own wind with a little effort. Find out if any local businesses or buildings have large fans they no longer need, or ask if you can set up your shoot around their fan.

If that doesn’t pan out, pros suggest that you ask an assistant to wave a large, flat object to create a breeze, or borrow a leaf blower.

You can set up professional-looking fashion shoots and use all the pros’ tricks on a tiny budget. You just need to stay flexible and resourceful, at least until you start earning enough to buy that big fan.

Goodbye and Good Luck to a Legend of the Runways

The Italian couturier and fashion legend Valentino Garavani retired this year after 48 years in the business. Valentino, who debuted his first full collection in 1962, has dressed great women of style including Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Julia Roberts. As befits an icon of the fashion world, Valentino’s farewell party has been stretched over the past year with galas and museum retrospectives in Rome and Paris. The Rome exhibition opened in early July 2007 and ran to the end of October.

“Valentino a Roma. 45 Years of Style” was exhibited at the ancient sacrificial altar Ara Pacis and was curated by Patrick Kinmonth and Antonio Monfreda. Highlights of the exhibit included a hall of mannequins modeling luscious red dresses in various styles—this particular shade of red has long been Valentino’s signature color--and exhibits showing how and when Valentino dressed some of his best and most glamorous customers.

The sea of red dresses was reprised on the runway in Paris this January, when the legendary fashion designer presented his final collection. The Musée des Arts-Decoratifs in Paris held its own exhibition this summer. “Valentino, thèmes et variations” ran from mid-June until the 21st of September.

Valentino may have quit the world of haute couture, but he hasn’t abandoned the world of fashion design entirely. The retired designer has said that he will turn his creative attention to designing for ballet and opera.

Anyone considering a fashion career should take time to consider the influence of this overtly romantic, hardworking, and consistently visionary fashion designer. Over the course of his long career, Valentino’s style stayed true to his singular vision: consistently classic and elegant styles in menswear as well as women’s clothing and feminine, romantic textures and frankly sexy colors for his red-carpet one-offs.

If your dream is to become a fashion designer, don’t be afraid to dream big and absorb the lessons of Valentino’s very long career at the top: stick to your vision, aim for immortality, and make beautiful, beautiful clothes.

You may also be interested in these videos:

2007 SPRING/SUMMER runway-Valentino

Valentino - W - S/S - 08
