Architectural & Interior Design

Angled Ceiling With Glass Floor

Some seemingly brilliant design concepts start to look dated in no time flat, but truly great creative concepts in interior design are ageless. Modern art inspired some brilliant design concepts, and made legends out of a number of talented interior designers. Clean lines and strong geometries dominate the look, with classic black and white always looking strong and assured.

1920’s modernism influenced the look of art deco styling, and California cool style in the 1940’s and 1950’s was heavily influenced by jazz culture and abstract impressionism. Everything in the first part of the twentieth century was heading in the direction of art-for-art’s-sake, and it produced some beautiful interior design. The minimalism that followed from modernism’s impact got a bit ridiculous in some of its more white-on-white, impossibly-uncomfortable-furniture, and too-much-chrome incarnations, but done right, a spare and elegant Japanese influenced living space is always in style.

Interior design is concerned with striking a balance between art and comfortable livability. A piece of furniture must be functional as well as elegant. Wall coverings should not induce nausea or depression. Ideally a well-designed space will delight the senses and inspire the mind and soul.

Truly great design concepts don’t come along that often. When a look proves timeless, a great interior designer keeps that look in mind as a touchstone, even while striving to create newer and better creative concepts. The modern look is the major design touchstone that emerged from the twentieth century. Who knows what new movement in art will inspire the next great visual motif for interior design? If designers are still referring to a look we create now in the year 2100 we will have reached the goal the moderns set for us in the 1920’s.

Great Modern Style Lives On

The solid and stolid monuments to the oppressive hierarchies of the past made way for light, clean lines and open, inviting spaces. Public spaces, in this line of reasoning, should be light as air but make themselves felt as art. Architecture is perhaps the perfect modern art because of its anonymity and seeming purity: the space exists, as it were, for itself.

Of course that’s not technically true. Architecture serves a purpose, and a pretty mundane one at that. Architects design buildings for people to use—to hang art in or make banking transactions, work in or wait for trains or planes in—so there are limitations to the purity of architecture as art. Interior designs must accommodate people and their actions and motions. A good architect has to design space with a consideration for how people move through it and use it, how they congregate in it and how it makes them feel to be in it. A computer generated architectural rendering will often include a 3-D tour of the space.

Good designs work, and hopefully they’re also pretty. The minimalism of modern architecture calls for the purity of a white on white space. Combined with light, slender, curvaceous modern materials and opulent curving motifs, a light airy color scheme makes a public space feel like a floating palace. Spaces where crowds can feel penned in, like stairways, should feel open, not oppressive, and facilitate movement, not hamper it.

If you are interested in architecture or interior design, we have good news: the world needs your talent. Public spaces don’t just invent themselves, they need creative minds and dedicated hearts to bring them into being, and the world needs more public spaces all the time. Someday, your work of art might be a source of inspiration for the people who move through it, work in it, and pass by it every day.

Hot Jobs in the Creative Sector

Major urban centers around the world—in places like China, India, Dubai and Russia—are experiencing a construction boom of unprecedented proportions. Building is happening so fast in some places that residents must feel as though they wake in a different city every morning.

This is good news for architects and interior designers. Developers are eager, not only to build, but to build unique, stand-out structures. Countries with rapidly growing economies want to show off their new power in the global economy, and world-class architecture is the name of the game. That means that young architects and interior designers may have the chance to travel to—and practice their art in--places they have never seen. The most ambitious of these artists will be given the opportunity to help build these new, growing cities--the likes of which the world has never seen.

Countries with developing economies have also begun to recognize the need to compete in terms of sustainability. Whether it is due to a genuine concern for the environment or a thinly veiled concern for their own images, developers are crazy about green building. Architectural renderings that incorporate energy-saving or self-sustaining features pose new creative challenges for architects and are popular with investors. Interior designers are also being encouraged to experiment with earth-friendly and sustainable materials.

Despite the recent economic downturn in the United States, the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts increased opportunities in the field of architecture. Jobs were expected to grow by 18% between 2006 and 2016. Interior design jobs were expected to increase by 19% in the same period. This positive outlook has a lot to do with the demand from developing urban centers around the world. The handbook cautions that competition for these highly sought-after jobs will be fierce, but that individual creativity and implementation of creative designs will be the deciding factor.

Modern Cozy Living Room

Modern architecture suits the needs of urban dwellers faced with increasingly smaller spaces in which to dwell. A good architect makes these small, spare spaces not merely livable but desirable. There are qualities of the modern style that make it an enduringly attractive interior design strategy: strong geometric figures, minimal color palette, an austerity that is the absolute antithesis of “busy” or “overdone.” At the same time, a good interior design or architectural rendering needs to broadcast a certain quality of warmth. People need to see themselves living in the space, so the space has to have a hint of life.

You don’t have to diverge from a minimal color scheme to warm it up. A trick that’s been in use for a long time in modern interior design is to use texture to add an element of warmth and luxury while keeping the color palette as simple as possible. Patterned wallpaper works very well for this. These days wallpaper is even more exciting to see, since it has suffered a rather long exile from interior fashions.

Accent colors are, of course, another classic decorating strategy. Choosing the correct color is both a science and an art. The tone of the accent can really define the era. Modern interiors in the eighties and nineties featured bright accents: red and lime green were favorites. Starting in the late nineties we saw a return to organic fabrics and more natural, neutral colors. Now organic materials and soft, natural shades have become essential elements of modern style in its twenty-first century persona.

The simplest things make a space desirable both as a work of art and as a living space, but those small details require the greatest care and sensibility. The lushly textured wallpaper and a natural-materials rug may seem at odds with each other, but if you combine design elements with loving attention and have the confidence to be a little daring, you can create a space that is clean and classically modern but totally unique.

How Interior Design Can Warm Up Modern Architecture

The art of interior design may sometimes seem like architecture’s younger, smaller-scale sibling, but in fact both fields augment each other nicely, especially when designing destination spaces like restaurants. The most obvious assistance an interior designer provides is making your model come to life with accents and colors. If your architectural rendering looks cold and empty, you may never have a chance to create the real thing. This is one of the many reasons architects do well to team up with interior designers, but interior designers often help architects solve major logistical problems as well.

Practical considerations obviously come into play when designing a floor plan: how close are your guests to the kitchen? How easily can customers and wait-staff move through the area? A large room in the modern style can be a flashy showpiece, but such an open, spare design can easily make a fine-dining restaurant feel like an institutional cafeteria.

Sound becomes an issue in eliminating the institutional feel. How are the acoustics? Do the building materials muffle sound or create echoes? High ceilings can have a dramatic effect in a restaurant, but they can also make the room feel cavernous and cold, and sound plays a role in this effect.

Breaking up the space (and potentially muting echoes) with bold geometric figures keeps the look consistently modern, while warming up the room with soft lighting and organic elements updates and softens the style. When architect and interior designer work together to make the most of a space, it’s easy to see it turning into a stylish dining destination.

Investors will be more likely to stake a concept that is fully realized, and designers and architects who work well together make teams that stakeholders feel confident betting on. So don’t be afraid to team up across disciplines to make big things happen. You don’t always have to go it alone when a winning team can often take you farther in your career.

New Hotels Favor Creative Culture

As the tide of public opinion turns toward the simpler, greener, and more personal, major cities have seen the rise of a new kind of luxury: the boutique hotel.

A boutique hotel may be recognized by a few staples of the genre: the signature modern décor; the high-stakes restaurant and the casually hip lounge (not just for overnight guests); and the level of personal attention. Most boutique hotels are smaller, the better to make guests feel like VIPs. Cutting edge architecture and interior design are emphasized in every detail, from the chairs in the lobby to the shape of the guest rooms.

In the past few years, boutique hotels have been springing up like mushrooms after a downpour. In the US New York, Atlanta, Georgia, and Portland, Oregon are seeing boutique hotel booms; in major cities the world over that pattern is reflected. Major new attractions include the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China, and Dubai’s hideaway Desert Palm.

The boutique boom reflects a cultural trend that, despite economic woes in many sectors, is wholeheartedly espousing a belief in the necessity of art, artists, and artistic culture to future prosperity and happiness. This is, of course, great news…especially for young architects and interior designers. For young professionals in the architecture and design fields, the boutique hotels are not only saying “we appreciate you,” they are also saying “we need you…to design more boutique hotels.”

Competition in this corner of the hotel industry is intense, and the highest marks go to the freshest, most original ideas, supplying opportunities for architects and interior designers to show off their skills and creative range. Investment in smaller, more personalized hotels ensures opportunity for smaller, less established architecture and design firms. Plus, boutique hotels are really nice places to stay!

What would your boutique hotel project look like?
