Animation & Game Design

Make Art; Land Your Dream Job

Video game design offers new career choices in animation and computer art, and of course if you’re a gamer yourself, this is a dream job. There are more openings than ever in this lucrative and satisfying business, what with different gaming platforms competing to provide the best experience and the coolest games. Computer animation is an essential component of a successful game. Lifelike characters give the players a stronger sense of engagement, and a really cool look can make an animated character into a pixelated celebrity.

The computer and video game industry has come a long way since Pong and PacMan, earning an estimated 9.5 billion U.S. dollars last year. Computer game technology has also driven the computer industry to new heights of innovation. Some computer features we take for granted, like sound and graphics cards and CD ROM drives, wouldn’t exist if they hadn’t been developed for video games.

Games designed for the most successful gaming platforms—including the Sony Playstation series, Nintendo N64 and WII, Xbox and Sega Mega drive--feature fully realized 3-D visual experiences created by teams of specialists in game mechanics, visual arts, programming, audio and video production, and narrative plotting.

As the industry grows, it becomes more vertically integrated. Big companies are getting bigger, and consolidating into mega-corporations, which can be bad news for independent designers and artists looking for more creative control. But there’s good news: as the big companies become more monolithic, more and more indie game developers are finding ways to get their product out over the internet, which means there’s a new market for independent, creative, and courageous gamers and game artists. You can have the career of your dreams, doing what you love to do in the first place. Your path to success is waiting for you. So gamers, be on the lookout!

Calling All Gamers!

Digital art has evolved so quickly, and into such a vast and varied discipline in its young life. It’s amazing to think that computer animation basically didn’t exist 25 years ago, and now it is incredibly sophisticated and increasingly accessible for use by creative people around the world.

New creative careers continue to spring up as computer animation and digital art expand their reach and influence. These include game design, special effects for film and television, animated features, web site design, and the creation of downloadable art and video.

The digital world moves fast, but there is certainly a place in it for a long and fruitful career for forward-thinking, flexible, and creative mind.

Just look at special-effects veteran Alison Savitch, President and co-founder of Threshold Digital Research Labs, whose film credits as a visual effects coordinator include The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), and The Grudge 2 (2006).

When Savitch started out as a production assistant in 1987, the digital work we’re accustomed to today was barely imaginable, but starting with The Abyss two years after her film crew debut, Savitch was responsible for creating some of the most memorable special effects work in film history.

Savitch was one of the pioneers in the field of Motion Capture for animation, creating characters for the Mortal Kombat franchise. Her signature achievement over the years has been to create realistic, organic-looking characters using computer animation, and, most notably in The Abyss and T-2 to give characters the magical ability to morph realistically into pliable, liquid substances.

Now no one in the know can look at computer animation that produces amazingly lifelike action and incredible tactile surfaces without thinking of Alison Savitch.

So what are you going to do to change the visible world? Digital art provides us with limitless possibilities, so stretch your imagination and keep Alison Savitch in mind.

Give it a Try and You Might Find You Like It

Some of us creative types are still a little bit afraid of the digital revolution. Sure, we use the web to communicate and to learn, to gain access to the artistic vision of our peers and to get our inspiration, but some of us still think that digital art is beyond our grasp. You may think that fields like computer animation and video game design require a kind of technical mind or knowledge of software and coding that just doesn’t fit with your creative character.

If you’ve been thinking about going to art or design school, you will have noticed just how many schools have started or expanded programs in digital art and computer animation. This is due to demand not only from students who are more and more interested in these fields; it is also due to increased demand from the marketplace. Creative careers of all kinds are becoming more plentiful in this digital age, and those of us who feel a little left out—painters, sculptors, traditional filmmakers—are going to miss out on a huge opportunity if we continue to shy away from computers.

The fact is, you can realize your artistic vision and start down a very promising career path if you are willing to learn, and a school is the best place to start. Even if you want to pursue a traditional path in art school, don’t be afraid to take a few classes in digital art and design, 3-D modeling and character creation, digital video production and editing. You might be surprised. It could be that your sculpture skills will put you at the top of the class in 3-D modeling, and you just might enjoy it.

Video game designers and film and video production companies need employees who are not simply technically gifted but who have a strong, unique artistic vision. You can always pursue traditional art forms, but learning about digital art can send you on creative paths you may never have considered. Your newfound computer skills might also get you a job that helps pay for all that paint, all those canvasses you wanted to splurge on. So be flexible and give digital art a try. Because you just never know where it might lead.
